You can do a lot of fun things, easily, if you learn how to use integrated circuits. Here, I built a scoreboard display: Every time I push the button, the score increases by one. The button simply provides a clock pulse to a CD4026 chip. And the chip takes care of counting, and turning on the correct LEDs in the 7-segment display. You can do a lot of fun projects with this. For example, make two of them and set up to keep score in a Fussball match. Or combine it with a laser trip wire to count how many people enter a shop. PS!
