The hill of three crosses

A while back, I climbed the hill of three crosses in Medellin.

It's green and beautiful, and a popular Sunday hike.

From the top, there's a great view of the city. Suddenly I'm seeing new things:

"Oh, there's a golf course over there."

"And a nature track over here, just by our house."

It made me think about how an overview gives you a better understanding of things.

And that by starting with an overview, things become so much easier.

Often I see beginners trying to understand complicated things in electronics before they have the overview.

That often leads to frustration.

In electronics, a good basic overview to get started is knowing:

  • How voltage and current behave in a circuit
  • The basic components in electronics and what they do
  • How circuit diagrams work and how you can build them

If you feel frustrated and stuck, take a step back and consider if you have a good overview of the basics.

(Do you feel you have a good overview of the basics, but still feel stuck? Feel free to write me and I'll do my best to give you some advice!)

PS! If you want help getting an overview of the basics, here are a couple of ways I can help:

  1. Getting Started With Electronics is a short and beginner-friendly eBook I wrote to help people get started. It contains clear and simple instructions to get started building electronics. Perfect for complete beginners.
  2. Join Ohmify: Ohmify is for people interested in electronics who want to learn skills like PCB design, soldering, and project-building - while also getting a proper understanding of the basics.

However, these counter tubes can be difficult to find and expensive; and, even if you do manage to get hold of one, you will still need to find a way to generate its operating voltage of several hundred volts. It is less well known that even a humble photodiode such as the BPW34 can be used to detect X-rays and gamma radiation.   more...     The Andonstar AD210, an Affordable Digital Microscope with a 10.1" Display The Andonstar AD210 is an entry-level model digital microscope with a large 10.1...
