Lesson 7: How to build the circuit

It's build day! That's the best day of the week. But first: Have you ordered the components yet? If not, go back to lesson 6 to see how to get your hands on the right components. In this lesson, I'll show you how to build the blinking light circuit. Let's start with the complete circuit diagram: (The numbers next to each pin in the diagram represent the pin number of the Hex Schmitt Trigger Inverter.) Lesson 6: Getting components

It's time to get your hands dirty! So far you've learned how to blink a light on paper. But the real fun is in building it. The first circuit I ever built was a blinking light circuit. I built it with my dad in our basement when I was around 13. Seeing the circuit working for the first time was such an amazing feeling! So in this and the next email, I want to help you build the circuit. I can't stress enough how important it is to build things, not just read. How do you build things with electronics? You need to have the components for the circuit. Most of the components can be found for a dollar or less. I'll show you where to get them soon. AND - you need a way to connect the components as shown in the circuit diagram. To connect the components, you could either solder them onto a prototyping board - or you could use a breadboard. Lesson 5: The finished circuit

It's day 5! You've nearly designed your circuit. Let's take a quick look at the circuit you had in Lesson 4: So... Remember from the previous email how the inverter reverses what is on the input so that the output becomes the opposite? If there is no voltage on the input, then the inverter outputs a voltage. That voltage switches on the LED. Recall that 'Voltage' is called HIGH or 1 in inverter-speak. 'No voltage' is called LOW or 0 in inverter-speak. So imagine if, instead of having the new resistor connected to the switch - as in the previous diagram - you connected it to the output from the inverter - as in this diagram: Now, let's see what we have: There's no voltage on the inverter input to begin with... the inverter turns that into a voltage on the output... which turns the LED on.
